The number of people confirmed dead following the collapse of a building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, has increased to eight as rescue teams continue searching for three others still believed to be trapped under the debris.

William Sifuna, the Director of Operations at the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), confirmed that eight bodies had been recovered from the collapsed structure. He said the latest two victims retrieved from the rubble were women.

The recovery operation, which began after the October 23 incident, has entered its 14th day, with emergency teams facing difficulties accessing some sections of the building.

Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba said rescue efforts were still ongoing, particularly in the basement, where more victims are feared to be trapped.

The operation involves several agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces, Nairobi County Government, NDMU and the Kenya Red Cross.

The building came down along 9th Street in Eastleigh, leaving several people trapped beneath the wreckage. Four individuals were rescued alive following the incident.

Meanwhile, the process of identifying the recovered victims is continuing at Nairobi City Mortuary. Families affected by the tragedy have been urged to remain patient as authorities proceed with recovery and identification efforts.
