Omar Yussuf, organising secretary of the Eastleigh Business Community, has confirmed that two people died and two others survived after a multi-storey building collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
Speaking about the incident, Omar said the collapse has inflicted heavy losses on local businesses. The road near the site remains closed, a situation that residents and traders have strongly criticised because they previously relied on it for their daily commercial activities.
The business community has approached the government on several occasions seeking the reopening of the road and proper crossing arrangements, he added. Omar expressed hope that the prolonged clearance and recovery work at the collapsed building would finally end the following day, allowing the area to begin returning to normal. He noted that the collapse has led to a sharp downturn in business activity as customers stay away and access remains restricted.
The multi-storey building collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh, one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial hubs, on 23 October 2026 at around 1:00 pm. Nairobi Regional Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed that the building was partially occupied, with tenants on the basement and ground floors.
